New York Mayor will sign the law that prohibits selling cigarettes for people younger than 21 years old
December 30, 2013
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will sign the law about prohibition of selling cigarettes to persons younger than 21 years old.
As Associated Press informs, the prohibition will apply not only to usual cigarettes and tobacco but electronic cigarettes as well.
Let's remind that on October 30th New York city council has voted for introducing ban on cigarettes sale to persons younger than 21 years old.
The Council by majority of votes has approved law that increases age beginning with which is allowed cigarettes purchase from 18 to 21 years old.
Ban will apply not only to cigarettes and tobacco but also electronic cigarettes. Authorities hope that after introducing these amendments number of smokers in the age from 18 to 21 years old will be reduced by 55 %.
Earlier in New York was allowed to buy cigarettes from 18 years.
Except the law about increasing the age limit, city council has also adopted the law that limits minimal price of pack of cigarettes with 10.5 USD and that increases the legal liability on illegal sale of tobacco products.
Let's mark that New York was first city where was introduced ban on smoking in bars, restaurants and other public places. Earlier this year Bloomberg offered to adopt law that prohibits displaying cigarettes in shop windows and cash desks. However, legislators have refused this initiative.
