Its founder, the first duke Marlborough, was the English general John Churchill. Among his descendants were such outstanding personalities as premier minister Winston Churchill and Lady Diana Spencer, princess of Wales.

There is another version also, according to which cigarettes got the name in honor of Marlborough lands. John Churchill became the governor and duke of these lands, for the great merits in front of the rebellious William Prince of Orange. Marlborough town still exists in Wiltshire country, which was founded at the end of XII century. The town was rather significant during Roman reign.
