| The ban on flavored cigarettes has come into effect in the United StatesSeptember 28, 2009 Center of Tobacco Products banned the manufacture, import, sale and distribution of flavored cigarettes with a taste of sweets, fruits, herbs, vanilla, cloves and chocolate. The prohibition does not extend at menthol flavored cigarettes and other tobacco products such as cigars so far. Recent studies have shown that 17-year-old Americans are three times more often smoke flavored cigarettes than 25-year old ones. Almost 90% of adult smokers began smoking as teenagers. Head of the Center of Tobacco Products Lawrence Dayton is sure that children and young people acquire the habit of smoking, having tried flavored cigarettes and less distinct tobacco flavor. Thus, the new ban will help reduce the army of smokers. In June, U.S. President Obama has signed a law that allows the FDA to regulate tobacco industry. In particular, FDA may prohibit certain types of products, limit the nicotine content in cigarettes and may ban the certain inscriptions on cigarette packs (such as "light" or "low tar"). In addition, FDA has the right to demand that manufacturers place a large picture on packets, frightening smokers, as well as printed information on the composition of cigarettes. |
